Rants, raves, predictions, contradictions, finger pointing, circular firing squad, kudos.
Remember the Music Tab at the top of the page…for your little celebration at your desk at lunch and while watching the numbers roll in tonight…of course, the Blues is there if needed.
My Predictions:
Obama: the Next American President Wins: Va, Penn, NC, and (drum roll) GA
Senator McCain: Wins Fla, OH,
Sanford Bishop: runs up the score on Ferrell, 60-40.
Saxby and Martin: runoff because Libertarian Buckley get 8%; Saxby wins runoff.
Jim Marshall and Rick Goodard: I can’t call it.
Dole in NC gone and the Dems end the night with 58 in the Senate.
Rant: Atlanta is the one number Black city on earth (followed by D.C. and Paris…France not Texas.) With Georgia’s strong Black community, why would a campaign plan a statewide effort that did not seek part of that voting block?
With the military (active duty, Guard, Reserves and civilian base jobs) being the path into the middle class for many Blacks, the GOP should secure 15-25% of the Black vote if the political handlers from inside the DC Beltway had a clue about southern Black folks. School choice is another opportunity wasted.
The GOP does not know Jack (Kingston)
If something works, bottle it and pass it around. Don’t let that drawl fool you, Jack Kingston and Johnny Isakson studied southern political history and know that any candidate can get support from the supposed “other side” with hustle, casework, a little pork, and a staff hell-bent on charm everyone.
Staff Problem: The Frat effect. Staff will push for college friends and people they know to join members staff. Find a GOP senator’s or congressman’s staff and you see a bunch of prep elitist who are not comfortable around people who are not just like them. Unbelievable. Kingston’s staff in GA and DC has always included rich and poor staffers; Black and White; public and private school products—a range. The first thing non-farmer Sanford Bishop did after beating a member of the House Ag Committee was to hire the son of one of Georgia’s most powerful farmers and the Farm Bureau members knew who was watching the hen house.
Which gets me to my last staff point: delegate, delegate, delegate. Congressional staff is like rural royalty and Black people like to have them grace our functions (Men’s Day at the church, Field Day at the school, big family reunion) — that means something.
There is no reason in the world that a prominent Black staffer or two in Georgia should not deliver enough of the Black vote to Saxby to win this election without a runoff. The same can be said for the Goddard campaign. The right Macon African American campaign staffer (who would become a congressional staffer) could have secured 20% of the Macon vote for Goddard personally. It’s like having Buck Belue (UGA quarterback for the national championship team) on a senator’s staff in Valdosta or Athens.
For example, Rick Goddard could have looked around for the bright young African American who was an A-list high school star in Macon; when down to Fort Valley State and became a college SGA star and is waiting to enter Mercer Law. Think about it, most of the Black professionals in middle Georgia went to FVSU, so that young man or young lady is connected in Macon, Tifton, Dublin and every town in the district. I think that kid could get 10K for any candidate.
Of course, the average Republican in Georgia thinks that all Black folks are Pelsoi liberals. I bet Sanford Bishop gets 40% of the McCain/Palin voters tonight because he has grown into a moderate/centrist voice of reason in the congress. If Bishop has your back (farming, vets, military) you don’t let the national GOP tell you to toss him; and by the same logic, Saxby should get support from rural Georgia (Black and White.)
Bottomline: If you don’t know something, admit it and finds someone who does.
Day after: the American President looks like me. cool.
The American President doesn’t act like me. cooler.
I got most of the stuff I predicted correct: Obama did not win GA and McCain did not win FLA and OH.
I wanted Saxby to win so the struggle continues–don’t thing rural Blacks will automatically support Martin. No way. And Obama is the man but he can’t push Martin on us.
Back in the day, P.E. stood for Public Enemy; today, it stands for President Elect. Wow.
We both missed that Marshall call, man that was a whooping he put on me.
That’s what happens when you give up on the Black vote 9 to 1.
You know how I feel about that. Jimbo ran a good campaign, Goddard tried. I tried. Man, did I try.
