Mike Murphy is a centrist running for congress in Georgia’s 13th District. Watching the Democratic primary will be interesting because Rep. David Scott has been strong in the past. Options for the voters are always healthy for the process.
Mike Murphy: Georgia 13th Congressional Candidate
April 14, 2010 by slyram
On this website, Mike Murphy says he is a Republican and works as Republican Deborah Honeycutt’s manager.

Manny: You make an interesting point and we are living interesting political times. It’s getting hard to fit people neatly into two major political parties and of course there are other parties and independents.
I worked on Capitol Hill for three moderate or centrist Democrats in the Georgia delegation who caught heat for being too far away from the liberal elements in our party. During that time Georgia Representatives Doug Barnard, Lindsey Thomas, and Ed Jenkins retired from congress at high points in their careers in part because of such heat or shall I say awkwardness. I walked into the office after lunch one day and someone said Nathan Deal just switched to the GOP and I said peace to Nathan and his north Georgia conservative district; he seemed pretty much the same afterwards.
When I stopped working on the Hill, Georgia Governor Sonny Purdue was still a Democrat. Personally, I like GOPer Herman Cain and Deborah Honeycutt but then again I generally like almost everyone. I think the only Republicans I have voted for are Cain, Isakson and Chambliss.
Manny, we are at a crossroads in southern moderate Black politics. While some Blacks have thought for years that we should diversify our political portfolio on some level, the landscape has and is changing after President Obama’s election. The GOP’s talk of a purity test and the purge of moderates like Senate Arlen Specter makes you wonder if Christie Todd Whitman’s moderate book “It My Party Too” is a political masterpiece or a laughing matter in their circles.
I was shocked to read on Booker Rising yesterday that former RNC Headquarter staffer Sophia Nelson left the GOP. I read her blog and find the sister intelligent and positive. Is the current climate making it difficult for positive conservatives of color to function? You know the Blue Dog selection of the Dem Team will take them with open arms or maybe some will become independent like Ms. Nelson.
I was impressed with Vernon Jones’ rural roots during the last senator race and remember some people jumping on him for voting for Bush in the past—people change. After all my ramblings, my final thoughts are that the political climate is volatile and fluid—heaven only knows what is next. I know Murphy has been concerned with the lack of a consistent urban agenda from the far right and spending from the far left. I am in South Georgia and for all I know Rep. Scott might be tailor made for his district. The voters will decide all of Georgia races and competition actually sharpens the skills of everyone—you see what Hillary did for our president. She inadvertently help prepped him for McCain and I so enjoyed watching a good candidate grown into a great one.
Manny, thanks for bring up your concerns and I am sure Murphy and his people will address them.
Manny,
You are touting yesterday’s news. I make no secret that I
was with Honeycutt in ’06 & ’08. Yesterday is gone, today is here and tomorrow is promised to no one. Fact of the
matter is that today, I am a Dem and an enlightened one at
that. I have seen the other side and have made my decision to come to the light, welcome it and embrace it and let it flow. The people have the power, not the party
in the 13th District. If the party were the answer to the
concerns of the people, we would have some smiling faces,
full employment, thriving small businesses, safe streets, transportation equity and equal access to opportunity.
It’s the man with a plan that will carry the day in 2010. I will get down in the river bed and roll up my sleeves and
trousers. Stay tuned.
All the best to you Manny and hope I will meet you out on
the hustings.

Yes, you are right on Slyram. I believe today’s political climate is volatile and fluid. And that’s a good thing. It’s amazing how a person can be considered the ‘best thing since sliced bread’ BEFORE he or she announces what his/her political affiliation is. That doesn’t make any sense to me. A person should not be judged and/or accepted because he/she leans one way or another. We are human beings first. We are children of God. We are mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, nieces, nephews, business people, etc. etc. But it seems once that ‘label’ of a political party is conveyed, all h___ breaks loose. That is part of the problem, I believe, that is stifling growth, new ideas, new and good potential candidates from running for office in the first place.
District 13 is home to a diverse group of people and opinions, but the largest divide is created by party, not our personal views, in my opinion. I believe if you look at the stats we are divided almost in half along major party lines.
I’ve talked to as many people with aversions to voting D as voting R. People, it’s time to step back and look at the man – or woman – and judge him or her on merits alone. Because while David Scott may have had good intentions before he went to D.C., he quickly took a hard left turn and became part of a corrupt system…one that includes both major parties. He must go. And actually, many, many career politicians must go if the new blood is to make a difference.
I voted for Honeycutt in ’08. I’m an ‘I,’ and I’ve not yet made up my mind who I’ll vote for in July, except that it will not be David Scott. This time around, we are very fortunate to have some good choices. I was very glad to hear of Murphy’s candidacy and I feel like he is one who can transcend the artificial party divide and represent all of District 13.
I am a district 13 voter. I grew up in the home that I am living in now. My husband and I live with my father. We (my husband and I) moved back in with my parents when we found out that my mother was going to die of cancer. So basically I have lived in this house, in district 13, for all of my 31 years, except for 8 of those years when my husband and I lived in Stockbridge. I am very concerned about the crime and gang activity in our community. I see the Flint River bridge everyday with the graffiti and driving through our neighborhood there are gang tags and foreclosed homes everywhere!
I remember when this neighborhood was a wonderful place to live. I don’t understand how this wonderful neighborhood and city could go to crap in such a short period of time.
My husband and I have seen drug deals go down just one street over. We have called the police on numerous occasions because of loud parties. The people having the parties are the same ones doing the drug deals. They don’t care! They do not care about this community and they do not care about the schools. I knew this place as a haven when I was a kid and now it has turned in to hell. We hear gun shots in the wee hours of the morning. There are always sirens blaring. I want my old neighborhood back! I want the trash taken out!
flutterbye417,
I believe that you can have your neighborhood back. The trash can be removed. You and your family can feel safe again. It takes commitment and sincere interest from your
neighbors, county officials, elected officials and especially
your congressional representative that can look into such
programs as “Weed and Seed”. I am sure you realize that
your situation is not an isolated one. I have heard similar
experiences from residents in Clayton County as well.
I will get down in the riverbed with residents like you and help turn this ship around. It can be done. I grew up in
Washington DC, I know about neighborhoods and understand what it takes to reclaim them and then maintain the quality of life that we deserve.
I ask that you feel free to contact me and we make arrangements to meet and show me your neighborhood so I can see and visualize the solutions.
Simply put, we can unite and take back the night. You deserve the peace and tranquility that you are paying for.
I appreciate you sharing your experience and now lets get to work. I recently attended the presentation of Judge Taske’s Five Step Program for dealing with Juvenile Delinguents sponsored by Clayton County NAACP. I am
convinced that through collaboration, cooperation and innovation, the misery index in our community is going to turn in the right direction.

David Scott must go. I hope Mike helps get goal accomplished. Let David Scott go run for the district in he lives in. I don’t see why I should vote for somebody who can’t vote for himself or who doesn’t suffer the consequences of what he votes for!!
David Scott must go, he has been in Washington way too long. He never does any work from what I can see. The people have the power in the 13th District not Mr Scott. All he ever does is puts on a job fair, and walks around like is a big shot. Way too many people are out of work, with the biggest increase of taxes headed our way. He has done nothing to reduce taxes, now he his going to let the lowest tax rate of 10% go up to 15% with him always taking the side of the the Dems in congress.
We need some one to rep us, as the dude from Mass. He needs to get off his ass and get some jobs back here. Quit sending money to every country that hates the USA. Keep the money here and help us. You drive down the road and within a block you see house after house that has HUD for sale signs, or where the people move out and just left. No work, no money, no hope. Yes David you have let us down here in the 13th. Mike good luck and God bless on your election.
I voted early, and voted for Murphy.
Terry, from where I sit I’m seeing the same things you are.
Yes – God bless Mike Murphy and God help the 13th district.
Please have Mike contact Don Shepard : class of 64 @ 240 813 5507 about upcoming class reunion. Thanks.
