GOP Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania is switching parties to join the Democrats and I am not mad at him—get in where you fit in; birds of a feather flock together. And I was not mad at Georgia Rep. Nathan Deal when he decided to switch from the “D” jersey to the “R” jersey in the 1990s. The goon move is running with party money and switching just after the election.
Georgia Rep. Jim Marshall would likely be more comfortable in the GOP but his political base is Macon, where he was a respected mayor before Congress. Macon is fully of Democrats.
Outside Atlanta, the Blue Dog Democrats are so near the center that switching parties would be like the difference between the Pontiac Firebird and the Pontiac Trans Am. Whatever happened with Pontiac? Fights and battles between Blue Dog Democrats and Republicans in the Georgia congressional delegation are just for show; as quiet as it is kept, those guys like each other and have a mutual benefit arrangement.
Completely agree, but neither half of the Big Government Party is anywhere NEAR the center.
Both support Big Government programs ONLY, and any ‘limited’ government they support – their current buzzword – does NOTHING to shrink government from its current, overly bloated, size.
Problem is, most Americans really DON’T want the government making all their decisions for them, which is why you have the rise of the TRUE ‘center’ party, the Libertarian Party.
Jeff: There are those who would say that the GOP of Reagan looks like your Libertarian Party more than the GOP itself. I can’t call it, but diversity and political opportunity are good things. As the minister says at the Methodist church, it’s all about thoughts, words and deeds; that party has briefly gotten away from their core principles and part of the big spending of the new White House is “correcting” from the recent past.
My friends think a big hit from the Blue Dogs on one front and hits from the LP on fiscal matters at the same time could pull voters in large voters away from the party of Lincoln.
Slyram: The LP is getting an influx of Reagan-esque Republicans who are leaving the party and coming over to us, much to some Libertarian’s dismay 😉
I agree with your friends though. I think this is a great time to be a Libertarian personally :D. In fact, I wouldn’t be completely shocked to see the Republican party fall hard and split into multiple parties, with many coming over to the LP 😉
