November 5th Etiquette
After watching the final debate, it dawned on me that Obama could actually win this thing. If that happens, there will be a lot of people (some of our co-workers included) who will be afraid that an Obama presidency will usher in the end of days. They’ll be watching us on November 5th (the day after the election) for signs of the end of times.
To keep the peace and keep a lot of folks from getting nervous, I think we should develop a list of acceptable celebrations and behaviors we should probably avoid- at least for the first few days.
- No crying, hugging or shouting “Thank you Lord” – at least not in public.
- No high-fives- at least not unless the area is clear and there are no witnesses.
- No laughing at the McCain/Palin supporters.
- No calling in sick on November 5th. They’ll get nervous if too many of us don’t show up.
- We’re allowed to give each other knowing winks or nods in passing. Just try to keep from grinning too hard.
- No singing loudly, “We’ve come this Far By Faith” (it will be acceptable to hum softly)
- No bringing of Bar-b-Que ribs or fried chicken for lunch in the company lunchroom for at least a week (no chitterlings at all) (this may make us seem to ethnic)
- No leaving kool-aid packages at the water fountain (this might be a sign that poor folks might be getting a break through)
- No Cupid Shuffle during breaks (this could indicate a little to much excitement)
- Please no “Moving on Up” music (we are going to try to remain humble)
- No doing the George Jefferson dance (unless you’re in your office with the door closed)
- Please try not to yell — BOOOO YAH!
- Just in case your’re wondering, Doing the Running Man, cabbage patch, or a backhand spring on the highway is 100% okay.
If I’ve missed anything feel free to add to the list. I just want to make sure we’re all in the same page when Obama brings this thing home on November 5th.
Now go get your early vote on and let’s make this thing happen!!!
ROFL, I guess I see it as funny. I could see how it could be offensive, but really racism is alive and well so it is… Well I don’t know how to term it…
I think it is cute for those who take it right but not for mixed company. Like back in the day when a range of friends wanted to watch “Martin” together at my apartment…I quickly said let’s find something else on the box.
I personally wouldn’t call this racism. I would call it a little ignorant. It’s the person who really thinks these are cute AND believe them, will be the same ‘black folk’ who will complain that Barack Obama is not doing anything for ‘black people.’ I can hear comments like ‘man, see I knew he was going to be like everyone else.’ Man, my situation hasn’t changed. I thought things were going to be different if there was a Black man in office.’ And so on and so on….
Just watch and see. The mentality of this type of thinking helps to perpetuate the negative stereotypes that exist among African-Americans and erodes the positive messages many other Blacks are trying to convey.
This is not racisim. Writings like this allows us to not take ourselves too serious. This is excellent for people who understand what it is like to be in the work place in the 2nd most conservative town in the country…Lubbock, Texas. This was fun and great reading !
Margaret: you are so right. Good lucky to the Texas Tech Red Raiders this weekend against UT….knock them off so the winner of the UGA – UF game can head for the national championship.
That city might be conservative but it must have a certain amount of hippness, being a college town. The measure of coolness is if you can get a good bagel and smear.
